Welcome to Tumaini Homes of Hope

“Tumaini” is a Swahili word for ‘hope’. Tumaini Homes of Hope is a small UK based charity that supports work with orphaned and vulnerable children infected and affected by HIV AIDS.  We have worked predominantly in the Coastal Province of Kenya for over 7 years supporting orphanages and providing education and healthcare-based projects.

Our aim

The UK Charity aims to assist orphans and vulnerable children affected or infected by HIV/AIDs to achieve the following: Provision of a safe and secure home: medical care: nutritious diets: counselling and education to enable children to live as happily as possible.

We have 6 trustees: 5 in the UK, Michelle Porter (Chair), Michael O’Leary, Mary Leadbetter, Stephen Turner, Susan Filby, and Mr. Paul Kongo, Mombasa, who represents our interests on all of our projects in Kenya. Mrs Sarah Turner is our Administrator on all of our projects. We employ a Development Worker in Bamburi, Mrs. Grace Munga. Mr Gavin Burnett looks after our website and Mr. Andy Day of CBeebies is our Patron.

We have achieved so much over recent years. Your support alone has allowed us to develop a small piece of wasteland into a home for over 50 children who would otherwise be lost to a life of poverty and destitution. It has also allowed us to build a school and a clinic for orphaned and vulnerable children within the local community. We identify our successes as a measure of what a small charity can achieve with the commitment of supporters who are passionate about helping orphaned and vulnerable children in Kenya. We are sure that the children will join us in extending a heartfelt thanks to you all for the work you have done.

Our focus has always been to make real and lasting change to the lives of children in Africa. Having focused for a number of years on establishing provision for children infected or affected by HIV we are now looking at projects working to prevent the spread of this dreadful disease.

"The first time I visited tumaini, I was greeted with the warmest welcome, the children sang, danced and smiled, and it was clear that this was a very positive and loving place for them to be. So I wanted to join the team who made this possible and help raise awareness about the disease and also help to support them and many other children in their position."
